Neither of these options represents a “bad” way to produce a flag, they just have some limitations that might not fit everyone’s application.

While dye sublimation offers inexpensive and color vibrant prints, drawbacks include a single-sided print, leaving the opposite side white. In addition, dye sublimation will only work on 100% polyester. Polyester is available in multiple weaves and grades but typically works well for indoor flags that won’t see any wind or weather. If your application for custom printed flags won’t be affected by inexpensive polyester fabrics or single-sided prints, then dye sublimation is a good option for you to consider for your custom printed flag.

The second method, direct to fabric, digital printing also offers vibrant colors and high resolutions capable of producing photo realistic prints. The drawbacks of using digital printing for flags are summed up in durability. Digital print heads, while accurate, produce very thin layers of water-based inks that sit on the surface of the fabric. While this method of custom flag printing may be suitable for windless indoor use, most digital prints will be destroyed by the sun, water, and wind once exposed to those elements.
