Discharge Ink Printing

Are you a big fan of screen printing, but you wish there was a way to get softer prints that are still vibrant?  Most screen printing is done with plastisol ink because it’s the industry standard, but a one-size-fits-all approach won’t work for everyone.  When you screen print with plastisol inks onto a dark garment, often you need to print a layer of white underneath to really make the color solid and eye-popping.  Plastisol ink dries stiff and the more layers you put on, the thicker it gets, which is bothersome to some people.  If you opt for discharge ink printing instead, you can still get amazing color and quality while keeping the print soft and flexible.

So how does discharge ink printing work?  Discharge ink is simply a water based ink used for screen printing that has an added discharge agent.  The discharge agent has the ability to remove the existing dye from cotton and replace it with the color of your choice.  Water based inks are much thinner than plastisol which means that your prints will have that “barely there” feeling when you run your hand across them.  Discharge ink printing is, for this very reason, wonderful for lightweight and flowy garments where you don’t want them weighed down by a heavy imprint.
