If you know a little about garment customization, then you’ve probably heard about screen printing.  Screen printing is very popular and used for all kinds of unique applications.  Traditionally, screen printing was done using plastisol inks.  Plastisol inks are great because they are vibrant and convenient.  Plastisol inks won’t dry up so they last a very long time if they are properly maintained.  AS time and technology pressed on, new types of printing and inks became available.  Nowadays, you can choose among screen printing with plastisol or water-based inks, or discharge screen printing.  If you like the multi-color look without having to feel the print on your T-Shirt then Discharge Printing is the technology that you’ll want to use for your T-Shirts.

Screen printing with plastisol inks leaves behind a ‘hand’, meaning you can feel the print on the garment.  If you want to print multiple colors, the overall hand of the print will be rather dense.  Water-based inks differ from plastisol in several ways, but the most obvious is in the resulting print.  With water-based inks, the goal is to eliminate the hand as much as possible.  You will feel a much softer print than with a comparable plastisol print.  Discharge printing is another way of getting an ultra soft print.  With discharge screen printing, the ink actually removes the dye in the fabric and replaces it with another color.  It works just like screen printing, where silk screens are created with a custom image and then printed onto garments, but the difference happens in the ink.  Instead of lying on top of the fabric as is, the discharge ink is printed on top and then run through a dryer.  During the drying, the ink ‘discharges’ the pre-existing color from the fabric while also putting in the desired color.

Discharge printing is a fascinating method to use for custom garments.  If you think you could benefit from discharge printing, don’t hesitate to come see us at AMBRO Manufacturing.  You can contact us to place an order, or for any questions, by email or by calling us at (908) 806-8337.
