The number one question we get asked here at AMBRO Manufacturing is what’s sublimation? The second most frequently asked question is how do you use dye sublimation for printing on t-shirts? Well, to be honest I was clueless until I was brought in the back warehouse and showed how to use our sublimation machine. For those of you who don’t know what sublimation is; it’s when a solid gets converted into a gas without ever reaching a liquid state.

So how does this relate to printing t-shirts? It’s quite simple actually. Dye sublimation printing on T-Shirts is a full color, full-coverage printing technique. We use a printer that has special ink. The ink is made up of super tiny particles that are printed onto transfer paper. Once we have the transfer paper properly sized then we turn to the sublimation machine. It’s essentially a giant heat press. When the paper is placed on the shirt, it is then pressed against the shirt using heat and time. The heat makes the tiny particles sublimate and bleed into the shirt.

In order to receive a long lasting product, we must use one hundred percent polyester fabrics. They are the only fabrics that have a the proper synthetic pore structure to capture the ink colors permanently. Unlike screen printing, the dye is absorbed by the fabric for a fantastic, soft-to-the-hand feel.
