Garment foil is best suited for large and blocky designs. Fine and whimsical details don’t tend to work well with foil printing. If your design elements are big (more than 1″) then foil can be used. If your design elements are small (1pt, 2pt etc.) then foil is not going to be suitable for the project.
You can mix and match foil colors, types and media styles. For example, 2 different types of foil can be used together on the same project. Foil and screen printing can be combined on foil printed T shirts and mixed for the same project. There are some nuances that involve mixed media that you may want to discuss with your foil sales consultant before you decide on a final design.

The setup involved with the creation of a custom foil print is too extensive and labor intensive to offer a print on demand solution. However, there are specialty vinyl products that mimic the look of foil tees, but with a much thicker application. While less desirable than a foil print, custom foil vinyls can be suitable for “one off” project.
Frequently Asked Questions About Foil Shirt Printing
How many washes will a foil shirt withstand and how should we wash the garments?
We recommend washing the garments with cold water, inside out and hanging to dry. The goal when washing is to prevent foils from rubbing up against the machine walls or other rougher garments which can scratch the foils off.
Can I iron a foil decorated shirt?
Under no circumstances should you iron or dry clean a foil t-shirt.
How long will the gloss of the foils last?
You will notice a 20% loss or color brilliance even after just the first wash. However, foils should remain intact if washed properly. If your art team designs your foil product with a distressed look, this can often mask any issues that occur with foil over time.
What is the largest foil design that you can print?
The standard print area for foil is 12″ x 19″, however, we have done jobs as big as 30″ x 30″, please contact us to have a discussion if you decide to submit a design greater than 12″ x 19″. Costs vary based on the size of the foil prints and the number of colors and additional processes used.
