The process of using Sublimation Printing to produce vivid and eye popping T-Shirts, Socks and other items is not a new technology.  Back in the day, circa 1970 when polyester was the fabric of choice, sublimation printing was used on a regular basis to create, by today’s standards would be considered, some pretty hideous patterns, but none-the-less, finding Sublimation Printing Companies was not hard.

Once polyester went out of fashion, Sublimation Printing Companies dried up.  The equipment of the time was lithographic, big and expensive, so once those companies disbanded, the technology of sublimation printing, was not very prevalent in the U.S.

With the advent of large format digital printers and desk top publishing, the days of Sublimation Printing Companies having to use lithographic methods to create sublimation prints, fell by the wayside.

Sublimation printing works only on polyester fabrics or polyester fabric family members, things like Rayon, Nylon, Satin and Spandex.  The fabric also has to be white.  Since sublimation inks are translucent, the white in the fabric is used to create the eye catching and vibrant colors that Sublimation Printing Companies have been producing.

The majority of retail sublimation printing for T-Shirts is done in a cut and sew capacity.  Steep minimum orders and high price points are generally associated with U.S. based sublimation and cut and sew facilities.  Off shore resources are available, but 8 week+ turn around times and inconsistent quality along with trust issues can also be factors.

Recently with the advances made by Sublimation Printing Companies, all over T-Shirt printing can be accomplished on existing T-Shirts.  While working with experienced Sublimation Printing Companies, a good deal of the known post sewn sublimation issues like missing patterns under the arms, near the side seams and near the shoulders, can often be minimized or avoided.

Keep in mind that not all Sublimation Printing Companies are alike, and working with someone experienced in T-Shirt Sublimation can make a huge difference in your results.
