Sublimation Printing is the process using opaque sublimation inks and with high heat, transferring them to a polyester substrate. Sublimation Printing can print on any item that is either made with polyester or is coated with polyester. For example, mugs and plates are made of ceramic or acryllic and you can not decorate them with Sublimation Printing, however, special poly based coatings can be applied to them and while invisible to the eye, are the perfect substrate for dye sublimation inks.
The benefits of all over printing using dye sub inks, includes eye popping and brilliantly colored designs, virtually 360 full coverage printing, and fine, photographic details on fabrics and garments.
The first thing that comes to mind when most people hear about Sublimation Printing is T-Shirts. And while T-Shirts are definitely a popular sublimation item, you can also decorate a wide range of other things using dye sub technology. Fabrics prior to being cut and sewn into garments are sublimated, control panels, mugs, plates, picture frames, sports balls, pinnies and uniforms are all sublimated. I would go as far as saying that you probably can’t leave your house without seeing something that was decorated with Sublimation Printing.
The most popular use for Sublimation Printing today is for small start up companies that are trying to launch their own line of decorated t-shirts. Sublimation Printing is popular for these companies because it enables them to launch with very professional looking designs, but in small quantities and helps keep their costs low. While dye sublimation is more expensive than heat transfers or screen printing, it can be far less costly in small runs because there is little to no setup, and virtually limitless colors without having to pay for expensive screen setup charges on multi-color screen printing jobs.
