Water Based and Discharge Printing

How much do you really know about water based and discharge printing?  If you answered little to none, then I’m here to fill you in.  Who knows, perhaps you may decide that water based and discharge printing are just the customization services you’ve been needing?  If you’ve only dealt with plastisol inks before, you are not alone.  Most printing companies around the country use plastisol inks because they are cheaper and are easily reusable. There are some drawbacks though because you can only print so large and with so many colors before the garment starts feeling thick.

Water Based and Discharge Printing

Water based and discharge printing doesn’t suffer from too much thickness.  Since the solvent in the ink is water, the prints that are left behind are soft to the touch, almost like they’re barely there.  Discharge printing is printing with a water based ink that contains a discharge agent.  The discharge agent will remove the existing color from the garment so that another color can be added to the shirt.  If the discharge agent is added to tinted ink, you can simultaneously remove the old color and replace it with your desired hue!  As with anything, there are some drawbacks with water based and discharge printing too.  Containing water as a solvent makes it so that water based inks will dry out after some time, so you must mix the appropriate amount for the job to avoid wasting ink.  Also discharge printing can only be done on 100% cotton.
