Screenprinting
You may have heard of screenprinting before, and you more than likely have seen it, but there’s a chance that you don’t actually know what it is, and that’s okay! There are plenty of things that we see every day that we aren’t actually aware of until someone points it out. Today I’d like to point out screenprinting and all of the wonderful things you can do with it. Screenprinting can be found everywhere because it’s simple, effective and affordable. You can easily change a boring blank tee into a fashionable garment with a creative design.
Screenprinting
So how does screenprinting work? The key to this process, and how it gets its name, is with the silk screens. A silk screen mesh gets coated with an emulsion that won’t allow ink to pass through so that you can etch out a design into the emulsion like a stencil. The artwork you wish to print gets separated into layers of color, one color per layer, and ‘burned’ into the emulsion with special exposure equipment. Each silk screen is mounted onto a printing press in sequence and you’re ready to start printing onto garments. As the garment goes past each screen on the press, the screen is lowered onto it and a squeegee drags colored ink across the surface of the silk screen. Once all layers have been applied, a fully formed image is created on the garment!
