Water Based Ink Printing
Screen printing is often used to customize garments, but did you know that there are different inks to achieve different results? Most screen printing is done using plastisol inks because it’s cheaper and easier to use. Plastisol inks are made of microscopic plastic pigments and they contain no solvent so that means you can leave them out in the air and not worry about them drying out. In order to set the print you need to heat the plastisol ink to specific temperature to allow the curing process to occur, but it tends to stiffen up the print and make it heavier. Water based ink printing is formulated differently so that you can get beautiful prints that are soft and lightweight!
Water Based Ink Printing
Water based ink printing is different because the ink does contain a solvent, which is usually water, which changes how you can use the ink. The presence of a solvent means you can’t leave it exposed to the air too long without it drying up, but there are benefits too. Water based inks are thinner, penetrate deeper, and when they dry the print feels virtually like the fabric you’ve printed on. Water based ink printing is ideal for printing all over designs because it won’t weigh you down as much and the ink can navigate over seams more smoothly for better image registration.
